3D Models – Dining Tables

Features

– Optimized for large interior/exterior scenes. Models & Textures are to be viewed from mid to far distance (closest distance as per render).

– Real world units and has accurate measurements so that 3D people can be placed on chairs and relative items to human heights and sizes.

– Geometry subdivisions where needed to allow for smooth edges without additional geometry where not required.

– Textures are optimized per geometry size – larger objects with higher resolution smaller objects with lower resolution maximizing viewport stability and ram usage when rendering large scenes.

– All textures are tiled and seamless.

– UV’s unwrapped or procedural where required to ensure correct direction and repeating for textures.

– Materials are all in one Multi-Sub Object and labeled so the user can easily distinguish each item. Diffuse textures are re-used in some most cases for Glossiness & Bumps with a color correction / output node for adjusting intensity or value – this allows for quick editing by the user and less textures to load into memory. Designed to emulate a PBR setup however are not game-ready materials.

3D Models – Entry Tables

I am working hard on creating some models which are all royalty/copyright free, available for download and use in your Architectural Renderings. The concept behind this is to have a furniture pack which is able to be scattered in buildings for exterior renderings leaving you to the creative work of vegetation, lighting, post production. These will be high quality looking models from a distance, have a small footprint on RAM, it will utilize forest-pro so it can be scattered around and change materials randomly so that models that appear twice in different apartments will have different materials such as timber, painted white, different types of paintings, kitchens, living room layouts etc all based on splines. Light pendants will stick to ceilings automatically, furniture to the floor, and paintings to the walls. I will also be providing these models as separate items in case you want them specifically for individual situations.

The first set I have released to the public are Entry Tables. You can view the technical specifications below the renders.

Vanlife – RV Conversion

The Back Story

Me and my partner Kate left Australia in 2017 and moved to Europe. Once we arrived we decided we wanted to explore as many countries as possible, as well as be able to work freelance on the go. So we decided the best way to do this was to buy a Recreational Vehicle. It came with all the necessities but it definitely needed a make over. Kate and I worked on a design and then we spent 4 months renovating it with her family who are skilled craftsmen and women.

The Original Van

The original van came equipped with 2x 60watt solar panels, 100AH battery, a 40L fresh water tank, a 120L grey water system, a non functional sink in the kitchen, fridge, bathroom with sink and chemical toilet (unused thankfully).

The Renders (Design Phase)

We decided we wanted a white/light blue color scheme which would allow us to accent using other bright or pastel colors. We also wanted to remove the base paint colors (like a hatched-grey material) and replace this with a clean white slightly reflective paint, which will also help pop the timber and steel features of the interior.

The Renovation

We sourced as many materials as possible to match the design – the only area which didn’t end up getting much attention was the bathroom as we decided we would not need the shower yet as we would be starting the trip in summer and we have an outdoor shower that we could use in the mean time.

We also upgraded the power for the van to 220AH gel batteries, a battery monitor, a built in generator that connects the alternator to the leisure batteries for cloudy days/weeks, and a 600watt AC Inverter for the electronics (no do not plug a microwave into this unit!).

We installed a table that can be converted to a bed, removed the walls and floors for insulation and a timber laminate floor, built new shelves for the kitchen/living area and repainted the entire interior. We also built a fold up table that can be used for dining, a work area for the laptop or a drying rack for the dishes – as its built on the kitchen wall and the passenger chair can rotate around to use it as well. Kate hand-crafted the fruit net, we cut a magnet strip for knives, a spice rack above the stove and she turned one of her paintings into a fold out table that can be used for coffee while lying in bed.

3DLUT Creator – Not just for Photographers

If you are a fan of using Look Up Tables (LUT) in your render’s then you have probably seen many packs online for purchase recently. LUT’s are a a way of displaying footage or images shot in a different color space to the intended space for your output. For example if you have received LogC footage from a client and wish to display it on a standard sRGB monitor you can apply a LUT to do this for you and then color grade in the correct space.

Many of the packs online available for purchase have prebuilt LUTs designed to give your render a final grade (kind of like an instagram filter). However with 3DLUT Creator you can make your own LUT specific to your image, match colors to a reference image, fine tune color adjustments for grading which saves you time in 3D and then display this in your VFB so you have your graded image in display while you render. Below is an example of a photo from unsplash we will try to match using this method.

I have gone ahead and built a scene similar to this one in 3D and left the tone mapping as default, so no adjustments to white balance and some materials were not the right colors but close enough to match in the LUT creator. You can see side by side for reference.

We will now use 3DLUT creator’s Auto match reference tools to get a good base point for correcting.

To get a better understanding on how the sliders work you should watch this video. Instantly its closer however some colors have shifted into the green such as the wall. You will also notice the colors on the top left hand grid have shifted so we can select the areas on the wall or ceiling and move them to be warmer. I have also done this manually on the floor to get that nice blue color. Depending on which window you are in (we are currently in the AB tab), you can just select an area of your image and drag it. When you are in AB mode we can affect color directly, you can also switch to other modes such as the Curves and adjust luminance separately, hue, saturation or separate channels. You can see a few more adjustments I have made in the Channels, Volume, AB, CL, and Curves area for fine tuning.

Once you are happy with the results you can then save this LUT out and apply it in your renderer of choice. The great thing is you can do this for any 3D software that allows you to use LUTs, you dont need to do any internal tone mapping and you can even work on low resolution outputs while your still rendering in the background. You can either bake this into your final render or if you prefer you can use it as a preview in the frame buffer, switch it off for final and import the LUT into post production for grading there. I prefer the latter option as sometimes there may be a few things I want to still change manually in post production, here is the final result.

Railclone – Windows Part 1

This is the first installment which is starting off basic and is a slight adjustment of itoo’s parameterising windows tutorial. Industrial Zones

Industrial Zones can usually look a tad dry and boring so this was a fun little project to work on for Ipswitch, QLD – a waste energy recycling power plant. The concept comes from a German company called Remondis and is a great initiative to turn all waste products into energy for over 50,000 homes in the region. You can check out some of the visuals I did for the project below.

Railclone – Parametric Facade Wall Builder

I came up with this Parametric Wall Builder as Im always building houses from CAD plans. It enabled me to be able to quickly build the walls and window, door & garage holes without needing to adjust the geometry by hand, it all works using splines. Its also helpful if a client comes back with changes to the Elevation as you can readjust the splines and the windows & walls readjust instantly.

You can adjust the Wall height, thickness & plaster size using user input parameters as well as the window capping thickness. You can view a short gif of how it works and for the full tutorial you can see the bottom of the page.
